PRESS RELEASEIssued September 9, 2011
Robert Simons to seek office of Mayor of Port MoodyRobert Simons, a long-time resident of Port Moody with an extensive record of service on civic committees and with community organizations, today announced his candidacy for Mayor of Port Moody in the November municipal election. In doing so, he issued the following statement:
"I have lived and played in Port Moody for 31 years and I see such great potential within our neighbourhoods and with our citizens. I know from experience that people who live in Port Moody are very protective of what we have here, and are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. I believe those things are reflected in my vision for Port Moody, which is to see our City's potential realized by nurturing the strengths and encouraging the diversity of viewpoints around the City Council table.
"I know it also is important that our tax-payers and residents feel they have access to their mayor, and that their concerns, opinions and suggestions are heard. Whether that means a visit to City Hall, or a chance meeting on the Inlet Trail, I am always available and interested to hear what our residents have to say.
"My involvement with a number of City committees and boards, including the Economic Development Committee, the Port Moody Police Board, Port Moody Heritage Society and the Port Moody Foundation, has allowed me the great opportunity to serve the community in exciting and diverse ways. I continue to be an active supporter of the Port Moody Arts and Culture scene, and I am proud of the legacy that is being developed through the dedication and commitment of those involved in visual and performance arts. The potential that exists in this area is enormous, and I am excited to see how we can grow into our brand of "City of the Arts".
"We have ongoing challenges related to transit & transportation, economic development and managing urban growth and densification which will require strong leadership. I believe my experience in strategic and tactical planning in a corporate environment with a large union-based work force is a critical skill that will serve the City well as Port Moody tackles these very important and tough issues. My personal style is to bring people together, and I believe my record demonstrates a proven strength in building a respectful working environment to ensure a team's success.
"Port Moody's history of being the first western terminus of the CPR is a distinct and unique heritage of the City. The City's environment for cultivating Arts and Culture is growing both the commercial as well as the tourist appeal of the City. Our natural environment is cherished by our citizens and must continue to be protected as we invite our neighbours to enjoy our shoreline, parks and wilderness. We can use these foundations as a base for future economic development which will respect our heritage and celebrate our future."
